Peter Mills has worked in the computer industry since 1978 and has specialised in data networking since 1980 and the Internet in particular since 1986. His roles have included support, operations, systems support and development as well as network support and development. He was instrumental in developing the G-MING Greater Manchester Metropolitan Area Network in 1995 and its subsequent development as the most advanced public sector broadband network in the UK. As a natural follow on he led the development of the regional Metropolitan Area Network, Net North West, and its formation into Net North West Limited.
As part of the development of Net North West he and Dr Unsworth of U-Net a North West based ISP pushed forward the concept of the first UK regional network exchange point, MaNAP, and the formation of Manchester Network Access Point Limited, a consortium of ISPs (including G-MING and now Net North West) with the host space for the exchange at the University. He became a founding director of Internet Facilitators Limited, which managed the colocation space and the MaNAP exchange. His role before becoming Managing Director of IFL was Head of Communications, Operations and Systems at the University with responsibility for 65 highly trained staff and strategic development of the technical infrastructure for the University.
